Something & Nothing

When Olly Dixon, Something & Nothing’s co-founder, wanted to shoot a new campaign for the launch of their alcoholic seltzers, the brief was to go in the exact opposite direction from the colour-blocked minimal sets we’d shot for the launch several years ago.

“I want us to shoot in the Rolling Stone’s European villa, early ’70s, but lighter and without the budget to fly us there – or time travel,” he said.

No problems.

Sophie Iona, our stylist, rented us a faux dadoed backdrop and selection of eclectic props to recreate the mood in my East London studio. I pulled for a lighting set-up that lent an air of point-and-shoot paparazzi spontaneity, which also made it easier for Bobby at Pavillion Films to drop-in and shoot some social media video assets.

Within a single day we had shot the key ATL campaign images and a handful of hand shots for their online store in the bag. London was soon awash with the posters, and the still-life image with the parrot candlestick remains one of my favourite gently-bonkers images of 2022.

Something & Nothing is as an excellent example of making a small selection of well-conceived and well-constructed images work hard for you, rather than always trying to swamp the algorithm with quantity over quality.
